  1. Other provisions for passenger transport

4.1 General conditions during the journey

Passengers are obliged to follow the instructions of the captain and the ship’s officers.

Disko Line accepts no responsibility for the passenger, during the time before the passenger boards and after passengers have landed. However, this discharge of responsibility does not cover maritime transport between ship and land or land and ship, if the fare includes this transport, or it is performed by a means of transport provided by Disko Line.

4.1.A Changes and duration

The timetable has been drawn up for the purpose of transporting passengers from A to B and on the basis of each ship's cruising speed. Thus, stays of a certain duration at the various destinations cannot be guaranteed, and Disko Line A/S can therefore not be made liable for compensation when a stay is shortened in relation to the original sailing schedule.

Disko Line can change a scheduled service if there are no passengers to the other destinations and thus shorten the timetables. The timetable has been prepared for the purpose of transporting passengers from A to B, therefore in the event of changes, passengers who are nevertheless transported from A to B cannot claim compensation or be charged for the difference after a route change.

Disko Line A/S reserves the right to compensation for possible additional costs in that regard.

Violation of the smoking ban may result in a fine of DKK 500, and if the crew's recommendations are not followed, it may result in the passenger being dropped off at the nearest port. In that situation, Disko Line A/S is not obliged to reimburse the passenger's ticket or other expenses associated with this.

4.2. Transportation of wheelchair users, pregnant women, infectious and sick passengers:

When transporting the sick, the shipping company can demand a medical certificate, just as passengers can demand accompaniment of the sick during the journey. The shipping company can give a discount to a disability assistant for a wheelchair user, if this is required during the trip. The status of the companion is indicated on the ticket after the surname with the following text: Disability Assistant / (order no. for the disabled).

4.3.B Accommodation of minors

Disko Line cannot be held responsible for accommodation of unaccompanied children in connection with delays or cancellations. Here it is the contact persons who must arrange for the child to be accommodated.

16-18-year-olds can be accommodated by Disko Line, but must still have a contact person who can take care of the minor in the city in question. Disko Line cannot be held responsible for the minor when overnighting. If the minor does not arrive at the new stated travel time after a cancellation, it is no longer Disko Line's responsibility to accommodate him or her, and he or she will not be issued a new ticket.

4.4 Check-in

Passengers must arrive at the ship's side for boarding no later than 30 minutes before a scheduled departure time. If check-in (i.e., the passenger can be checked-in and has checked-in their baggage on board) has not been completed 10 minutes prior to the planned departure, Disko Line A/S reserves the right to sell the seat to another party. Late arrivals and ‘no shows’ are unable to have their ticket refunded, in accordance with the cancellation rules in point 3.7.

Passengers with Disko Line are themselves responsible for scheduled arrival with Disko Line's routes, leaving enough time to check in for any onward journey with Air Greenland, Arctic Umiaq Line or Air Iceland. For domestic flights, a minimum of 1 hour is required, for international travel 1 hour and 30 minutes are recommended.

Passengers with Air Greenland, Sarfaq Ittuk, Air Iceland etc. are themselves responsible for their planned arrival, leaving enough time to check-in for any onward journey with Disko Line. If arrival is planned later than the latest check-in at Disko Line, Disko Line cannot be held responsible for this.

Is your arrival with Air Greenland, Sarfaq Ittuk, Air Iceland etc. is delayed, so that you arrive late for your scheduled departure with Disko Line, please notify Disko Line as soon as possible in order to change your departure.

Disko Line is not liable for damages if the delay is due to force majeure events.

4.5.A Delay / cancellation during transport or after check-in

If necessary, accommodation and meals will also be covered according to the general rules until the passengers have arrived at the final destination with Disko Line.

It should be noted that passengers who have requested accommodation via Disko Line, who then subsequently decide to take an alternative means of transport other than Disko Line to their destination, will not be refunded for the ticket price.

4.5.D Refund of tickets with other travel companies

Due to delays with Disko Line, Disko Line cannot refund Air Greenland tickets if passengers decide to cancel the trip, but Disko Line arranges for the purchase of a new ticket from Air Greenland. After a delay, Disko Line cannot assist with postponing the return journey with Air Greenland.

4.5.E Refund of Disko Line tickets after delays from other travel companies

In the event of irregularity, Disko Line will automatically rebook a cancelled voyage on the first available departure, if the weather allows this. Passengers will be re-booked for travel on the first available connection to their destination. The price difference herein can neither be refunded nor charged.

You will receive an SMS about the change as soon as you have been rebooked, and will receive a new itinerary. If the traveller accepts this offer, no compensation for price difference will be available.

If you do not want the proposed reorganisation of the journey, it is important that you immediately contact Disko Line by telephone on (+299) 94 53 00 to be rebooked for the first available departure with the original means of transport. The delay will often have a longer duration.

Baggage stored in the baggage compartment during a ship transfer is the sole responsibility of the owner.

Handling of baggage to/from or on board the ship is at your own risk. It cannot be expected that Disko Line personnel will assist with handling baggage to/from or on board the ship. Any assistance is at your own risk, and if the baggage is damaged by accident, Disko Lines A/S cannot be prosecuted for liability.

4.7.B Large baggage, prams, bicycles, etc.

Bicycles and prams can be included, but DKK 100 is charged in tax per piece, regardless of distance. A ticket for this must be purchased by contacting Disko Line in Ilulissat at least 48 hours before departure, and cannot be paid for by cash on board the boats. Inclusion of other large or bulky items such as kayaks (price per kayak DKK 1,000) and the like requires special permission from the shipping company.

Large baggage, including e.g., prams, bicycles, moving boxes etc., will be placed outside as there is no space inside the boat. Therefore, it is the passengers' responsibility to ensure that they are properly covered so that they cannot be damaged by water, salt, etc. In the event that these are not properly wrapped, Disko Line cannot be held liable for compensation. Passengers must also ensure that there is nothing which can blow off tables and that there are no parts that can fly away.

4.7.C Conditions when travelling with firearms

If you travel with a firearm, a special declaration must be completed before departure.

Download "Declaration when transporting firearms" Click here to download form.

Declaration and weapon must be presented at check-in. At check-in, firearms must be separate. The bolt must be packaged separately, which will be stored by the ship's personnel. Ammunition of any kind must not be brought on board the trip, as these are seen as dangerous goods.

4.7.D Baggage Delay

Disko Line is obliged to pay compensation for delay in baggage. The obligation lapses when the company has otherwise taken all necessary precautions to avoid the same. It also lapses in cases where it is impossible to take such precautions. Liability for damages is limited to a maximum of ‘Special Drawing Rights’ SDR 1,131 (SDR 1 = approx. DKK 9).

In the event of delayed baggage, Disko Line pays DKK 500 per day, per passenger as compensation. However, this is limited to a maximum duration of 3 days, i.e., a maximum of DKK 1,500 per passenger applies.

Disko Line has 30 days to locate the delayed baggage before compensation for baggage can be paid. Disko Line follows the set of rules for "The airlines' liability in relation to passengers and their baggage" which are the aviation's international compensation rules. The maximum compensation that can be obtained for lost baggage is SDR 1,131, which corresponds to approx. DKK 9,530.

4.7.E Baggage lost, damaged or destroyed

In the event that your bag / suitcase is damaged during transport with Disko Line, this must be reported immediately to our staff on board, and at the latest before leaving the ship. If the damage to the bag / suitcase has not been reported to the staff before leaving our ships, Disko Line is not obliged to replace the damaged bag / suitcase.

In the event of damaged baggage, Disko Line staff are to assess on arrival, whether the baggage can be repaired or if it needs to be replaced.

Disko Line is not responsible for minor damage caused by normal responsible handling. The passenger is responsible for ensuring that the contents of the baggage are properly packed to withstand ordinary baggage handling.

Before you report a claim to Disko Line, we recommend that you first contact your own travel insurance company. As a shipping company, Disko Line has access to limit its liability, which the insurance company does not have, just as the insurance company will be able to help you keep in touch with Disko Line.

Disko Line assumes no responsibility for sensitive or perishable items. Likewise, we cannot take responsibility for things which are not properly packaged. We are not responsible for loss of, damage to or delayed delivery of items that are easily damaged, e.g. (but not limited to) money, jewellery, silverware, electronic equipment, securities or samples.

The liability for destroyed, lost or damaged baggage is assessed up to SDR 1,131 (SDR 1 = approx. DKK 9). In the case of baggage that has been checked-in, the company must pay compensation, regardless of whether it bears the responsibility. However, this does not apply if the baggage already had defects. If this concerns baggage that has not been checked in - for example hand baggage - the company is only liable for damages when the liability is due to errors on the part of the company.

If you travel with items of higher values, you must have separate insurance with your own insurance company.
