Travel information

Day 1, 4: Ilulissat JAV

Ilulissat - Jakobshavn

Welcome to Ilulissat. Ilulissat is the third largest town in Greenland, also called Jakobshavn, and rewards you with one of the greatest natural wonders of the world: Ilulissat Icefiord/Kangia. The Icefiord became one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 2004 and is the birthplace of the massive collection of icebergs that have calved from the Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, one of the most productive glaciers in the world.

Ilulissat is the perfect iceberg paradise in Greenland. Ilulissat is a charming town, and the colourful houses on the hill are a beautiful mix with modern buildings in correlation between man and nature.

What to see and do in Ilulissat

  • City walk
A walk around town on your own or with a guide is a must do. Ilulissat is, no doubt, a unique place and the view to the impressive icebergs floating in the Disko Bay is a spectacular sight. Around the town you will see sled dogs waiting for the winter to come.
  • "Brættet"
Centrally placed in the town we find “brættet”, where fishermen and local hunters sell their fresh catch to citizens and tourists. The supply is varied, and you will often find halibut, cod, seal and occasionally reindeer -, musk -, and whale meat.
  • Museum
The town also houses 2 interesting museums: Ilulissat Museum, the birthplace of famous arctic explorer Knud Rasmussen, and the art museum, which displays some beautiful watercolour paintings of the local painter Emmanuel A. Pedersen.
  • Kayak harbour
The harbour is centrally placed in the old part of town next to the hospital. Here you might be lucky to see the locals kayaking and practising the Eskimo roll.
  • Crafts
The town provides a well-stocked supply of shops selling beautiful handicraft etc. and you will easily find great and unique souvenirs. Some of the local artists have a workshop near by the harbour, and people are welcome to pop in to see them processing bone and tooth into beautiful jewellery.
  • Huskies
The dog sledding season begins in September and normally ends in May. During the 4 months in between, the dogs usually are inactive. New litters are raised and the puppies ravage and bite in everything within their reach.
  • Restaurant
The fresh air stimulates your appetite and fortunately you will find several good restaurants in Ilulissat. They naturally use fresh Greenlandic commodities in their cooking. You might as well start looking forward to delicious lamb, reindeer, musk, shrimps and halibut - Takana!

Nature and Hiking

  • Sermermiut
When hiking to the old settlement of Sermermiut, you are walking along Ilulissat Ice Fiord. from here the view of the stranded icebergs is absolutely perfect.
  • Sailing among the Icebergs
Go on a boat trip among the icebergs, under the midnight sun - it is an experience for life!
  • Helicopter
If you want to experience the Kangia glacier and the enormous icebergs in Disko Bay from a different perspective, you can do so by helicopter from Ilulissat.
  • Whale Safari
It is possible to go on a whale safari surrounded by icebergs in the Disko Bay. The boat trip gives you plenty of time to observe the giants of the sea at close range.

Day 2-3: Ilimanaq XIQ

Ilimanaq

Visit a settlement where the everyday hustle and bustle is completely gone. Ilimanaq settlement is well run, with colorful houses scattered around the terrain and with a stunning view to the Disko Bay.

The boat trip to Ilimanaq runs through the many grounded icebergs from Kangia ice fjord and maybe you're lucky enough to spot whales and seals before arriving to the village. From the seaside the colorful houses are very visible as well.

Things to do in the Settlement

  • Settlement Tour
We strongly recommend a village tour on your own or with a guide. If you like to hear stories about the harbor, school, church and shops, you should follow the guided tour. Departure time is announced in Ilimanaq Lodge reception and is included in the stay.
  • Sled dogs
The sled dogs are scattered around in their territory near their musher’s residence. In the summer time puppies run around freely and play. Please remember that the adult dogs are not pets and must not be touched.
  • Restaurant
in Ilimanaq you will find one of Greenland's oldest houses, now turned into a restaurant. The restaurant has been lovingly restored in cooperation with RealDania. A buffet dinner of super fresh Greenlandic ingredients is served. Look forward to Greenland lamb, smoked reindeer and the musk ox, halibut and shrimps - Takana / Here you go!
  • The Terrace
Enjoy the view of the stunning Disko Bay from your private terrace. All cabins are tastefully decorated and from the sleeping loft, living room as well as from the terrace, you have an incredible view of Disko Bay with its many icebergs. And who knows? Often the whales pass close by - so keep looking.

Nature and Hiking in and around Ilimanaq area

  • Qajaa - settlement
Visit one of the older settlements in Greenland: The almost secret research area near Qajaa. The Qajaa midden is in the permafrost, and preservation conditions are unusually good and many remains testify to the Saqqaq culture, which lived here 4,000 years ago.
  • Ice Cap
From Ilimanaq you have access to the Icefjord hinterland. The excursion to the ice cap is with ATVs and by boat. We go ashore at the southern bank of Tassiusaq fjord. From here we can hike to the ice edge and onto the ice between crevices and wells to explore one of the many glacier tongues emanating from the ice sheet.
  • Midnight Sun
The sun reaches its highest point in the sky and shines all day on June 21. Several weeks before and after you can enjoy long light nights and a long day full of experiences in the area.
